The Proto-drakes are the prehistoric progenitors of modern Dragons and one of the biggest mysteries of the wizarding world. The origins of Dragons has been a subject of debate for millenia and the idea that the Dragons living today are descendant of a precursor species has existed for centuries. It wasn't until 1999 when the remains of a dragon never before seen were uncovered in South America. The skeleton, tens of millions of years old and distinct enough from a regular dragon, was called the Proto-drake, "proto" meaning "first".
