Maria Vorst was the sister of Adolph Vorst, curator of the Leiden Botanical Gardens, and daughter of Aelius Vorst(ius), who had been the previous curator. She herself was a talented illustrator and artist, as well as a student of plant life. Sometime prior to May 1632, she and her brother traveled to Grantville. While her brother returned to Leiden, she stayed to study botany and gardening. While there, she stayed with Lolly Aossey, who introduced her to the sport of white-water canoeing, which she came to enjoy.
