Everybody knows that free markets and freedom go hand in hand. One only needs to look at the flourishing democracy in Colombia or the benevolent former regime of Augusto Pinochet in Chile to see how much neoliberalism improves the lives of corporate executives and government officials all of the world's citizens. The Contras in Nicaragua are another example of freedom loving neoliberals. They helped to liberate Nicaragua from the evil Sandinista government by slaughtering and maiming innocent civilians. They loved freedom so much that they were willing to hack limbs off people in order to attain it. The Contras were so righteous and just, that the United States supported them. Ronald Reagan said that they embodied American values and represented everything he stood for.

  • Neoloberalism describes an ideological movement and historical moment in which policies of privatization, deregulation, including deregulation of international trade, and a reduced public sphere were embraced by decision-makers. abstract
  • Neoloberalism describes an ideological movement and historical moment in which policies of privatization, deregulation, including deregulation of international trade, and a reduced public sphere were embraced by decision-makers. Although these policies often produced short term increases in economic growth, they also led to long term increases in economic, social and political inequality. William E. Connolly notes that the simplicity of "self-organizing markets with beautiful powers of rational self-adjsuetment and states as clumsy agents of collective decision-making" is part of the appeal of neoliberalism. The problem he notes is that this "inflates the self-orgnizing power of markets by implicitly deflating the self-organizing powers and creative capacity of other systems." The tragic result of such ideological indoctrination is true believers willing to make the following kind of absolutely sweeping claim: "Anything that is done by the State can be done cheaper, and more efficiently by a private entity." That is the voice of a bitter little someone with too little experience of either real governments or real private firms.
