West Sound has been settled for centuries, first by Coast Salish tribes, then homesteaders, fishermen and boaters. In the early years of settlement, West Sound was known locally for some of the best orchard land on Orcas Island. Today the community is small with local cafes, breakfast inns, and local farm operations. There is a marina as well as privately owned Picnic Island off the coast.
