It was produced by John Leekley Productions and Spelling Television, and premiered on Fox on 2 April 1996, but ran for only eight episodes before being cancelled. The series is set in San Francisco. A police detective, Frank Kohanek (C. Thomas Howell), discovers that vampires exist while investigating an alleged mobster, Julian Luna (Mark Frankel). In fact, Julian is the local ruler of five clans of vampires who live in the city. Collectively, they call themelves "The Kindred". Vampires only survive by disguising themselves as humans (the "masquerade"). Julian is a strict enforcer of the laws that govern them to protect their anonymity. Frank Kohanek forms an uneasy alliance with Julian to try to prevent a vampire war. Meanwhile, Julian struggles with romantic feelings for a human reporter, Caitlin Byrne (Kelly Rutherford).
