In the Six Day War, Israel defeated the combined forces of Egypt, Syria and Jordan. As a result, the Israelis gained control of Mount Moriah (the Temple Mount) and the Western Wall, the first time Jews gained control of the old city of Jerusalem for two thousand years. The day is marked by state ceremonies, memorial services for soldiers who died in the battle for Jerusalem and parades through the city's downtown.
