McCord started out in junior with the Porcupine Combines and the Kitchener Greenshirts. He then joined the Montreal Junior Canadiens but never got chance to wear the uniform of the parent club. He spent the next nine years with the AHL's Springfield Indians and the Trois Rivieres Lions of the Quebec Hockey League. He was considered one of the best stay-at-home defenceman in the minors and was named to the QHL second all-star team in 1959 and placed on the AHL first all-star team twice and second all-star squad three times. In his NHL career, McCord scored 10 goals and 58 assists.
