  • Tesso was not always a monster; once, he was a man, a buddhist monk named Raigo. Ragio was a monk of the monastery of Mii-Dera, who were enemies to the warrior monks of Enriyaku-ji, in the mountains near Kyoto. This rivalry could escalate to violence; the monks of Enriyaku-ji burned Mii-Dera to the ground no less than four times)! At the time, the Emperor Shirakawa came to power, but he found himself in want of a son to succeed him. So it was that he approached Raigo at Mii-Dera and called upon him to pray on his behalf for birth of a strong son. In return the Emperor promised to grant Raigo one favour of his choosing. Raigo took to his task with a great fervour, praying day and night for the birth of an heir. When Prince Taruhito was finally born, the delighted emperor returned to Raigo to fulfil his promise. Raigo’s only request was to have his own monastery where he could train new novices taking holy orders at the temple. However, Mii-Dera's the monks of Enriyaku-ji were outraged by the news and used their considerable military and political power to ensure that Raigo never got his monastery. Enraged, Ragio commited suicide, vowing revenge against those who had wronged him. In his final moments, his spirit was spared by the god Mizuchi who promised Ragio's soul vengeance against those who wronged him and a yokai army to command, in exchange for his worship and servitude. Ragio ceased to be that day... Ragio was reborn as Tesso, a rat demon with metal teeth and claws, capable of shredding and tearing almost anything. Mizuchi also gave Tesso the ability to call a legion of rats to do his bidding. As Tesso, Ragio and his army of rats marched on his enemies at Enriyaku-ji and swarmed through stores and libraries where they kept all their most treasured scrolls, books and artifacts destroying anything they came across. The monastery was destroyed, and the monks scattered to four winds. His enemies destroyed, yet his thirst for vengeance still unsatisfied, Tesso and his army wreaked havoc on the land, before he was slain. His body, along with those of his rat minions was burnt and his ashes buried. However, his spirit, since he had not died at peace, remained in turmoil. In the present day, the amusement park Yokai World was built over Mizuchi's resting place . Mizuchi, angered at this defilement, called Ragio's spirit back from the afterlife, in the form of Tesso, to scare the humans off. Tesso appeared at Yokai World's fireworks show, subduing the security guards and sending his army of rats to cause havoc on the stage.
