- Hippolyta was a cavewoman brutally murdered by her mate more than 32,000 years ago. Her soul was deposited in the Well of Souls with that of other slain women. She is the first to be reincarnated by the Olympian Gods thus becoming Queen of a new race that would become the Amazons.

The lines were, Four days will quickly steep themselves in night; Four days will quickly dream away the time. - Hippolyta appears in the myth of Heracles. It was her girdle that Heracles was sent to retrieve for Admeta, the daughter of king Eurystheus, as his ninth labor. When Heracles landed the Amazons received him warmly and Hippolyta came to his ship to greet him. Upon hearing his request, she agreed to let him take the girdle. Hera, however, was not pleased, as was often the case with Heracles. To stop him, Hera came down to the Amazons disguised as one of their own and ran through the land, crying that Heracles meant to kidnap their queen. Probably remembering all too well what Theseus had done, the Amazons charged toward the ship to save Hippolyta. Fearing that Hippolyta had betrayed him, Heracles kisses her for about two minutes then hastily killed her, ripped the girdle from her lifeless bo
- The character Hippolyta (then spelled "Hippolyte," although the spelling changed to "Hippolyta" during the 1960s) first appeared in All Star Comics #8 (1941), the same comic book that introduced her daughter, Wonder Woman. This original version of the character possessed black hair. According to this story, Hippolyte and the Amazons once resided in "Amazonia" in the days of ancient Greece, until they were beguiled and bested by the demi-god Hercules, who had been sent after her by the Wargod Ares, now named Mars. She was able to beat him using the girdle, but he seduced her, and tricked her into allowing him to see the girdle, allowing him to steal it. This caused them to lose the favor of their patron goddess, Aphrodite. Eventually she and the other Amazons were forgiven, but had to wear
- Queen Hippolyta was the daughter of Ares and a devout follower of her grandmother Hera and leader of the Amazon tribe near Gargarencia. She believed that men were hardened creatures who could never learn to respect women. Hera ordered her to kill Hercules but when Hercules began to show that men could be different, Hippolyta fell in love with him and disobeyed the goddess and slept with Hercules. For this, Hera took over Hippolyta's body and began a battle with Hercules. When Hercules revealed his love for Hippolyta and refused to kill her, Hera threw Hippolyta over a waterfall, killing her. She was later resurrected when her grandfather Zeus helped Hercules to go back in time.
