  • Naval Support Facility Thurmont is a government installation located in the hills of Catoctin Mountain Park, in Frederick County, Maryland. It is commonly known as Camp David, the country retreat of the President. The installation is staffed by a full-time professional fire department consisting of roughly a dozen firefighters. The department is responsible for protecting 130 buildings at the retreat, many of which are wood construction and bear historical significance. Personnel are placed on standby for all Presidential helicopter movements and for training flights conducted by Marine Corps Helicopter Squadron One (HMX-1). Firefighters receive training at the DoD Fire Academy, Goodfellow AFB, TX and also at the Maryland Firefighting Academy. In 2010 the department signed a mutual aid agreement with the surrounding departments in . Within Frederick County the department is designated as Station 51.
