The Demilitarized Zone, also known as the DMZ, is the area representing the border which divides the South and North Korean nations, featured in Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction. Its name is ironic, as it is supposed to be a non-military area, and yet some of the most heavy fighting is situated around it .

  • The Demilitarized Zone is an independent state between the Federation and Cardassian border.
  • Many demilitarized zones are considered neutral territory because neither side is allowed to control it, even for non-combat administration. Some zones remain demilitarized after an agreement has awarded control to a state which (under the DMZ terms) had originally ceded its right to maintain military forces in the disputed territory. It is also possible for powers to agree on the demilitarization of a zone without formally settling their respective territorial claims, enabling the dispute to be resolved by peaceful means such as diplomatic dialogue or an international court.
  • The Demilitarized Zone (or DMZ) was an area of space established as a buffer zone between the United Federation of Planets and the Cardassian Union in 2370. Neither side was permitted to deploy armed starships or establish military bases in the Zone. Also, the border between the two powers was redrawn, resulting in some Federation colonies being turned over to Cardassian control, and vice-versa. The colonists on the affected planets were given the option of resettlement, though most refused. (TNG episode: "Journey's End")
  • In drafting the zone, the border between the two powers shifted, placing colonies of either power on the other side of the border. Both powers offered the colonists the option to resettle on a planet within their own government's area, but most colonists refused. (TNG: "Journey's End")

Common places to find demi zones would be on a company base or a portal. You will know if you are on a demilitarized zone once you see the text "Demilitarized zone" pops up on your screen (as shown below).
  • However, many civilian colonists on both sides of the border objected to the transfer of control and secretly armed themselves, violating the peace terms that established the DMZ. The Cardassian Central Command began secretly shipping weapons to their colonists in the DMZ so as to oust the Federation colonists, using neutral species such as the Xepolites as intermediaries. In response, the Federation colonists banded together and called themselves the Maquis, dedicated to freeing themselves from Cardassian control. Although the Maquis gained no official support from the Federation, many in the Federation (including Starfleet) were sympathetic to their cause and covertly provided aid. (DS9: "The Maquis, Part I", "The Maquis, Part II"; TNG: "Preemptive Strike" )
  • The Demilitarized zone is a zone on the border that is heavily patrolled by Tundran Territories and Western Frontier military forces, it is litteraly a line right down the middle of the Tundran and Western Frontier borders, with a massive military strike force on either side, ready to attack at any moment. It is non-existent in Battalion Wars 2, seeing how it was taken away when the Tundran's and the Frontier allied.

  • In drafting the zone, the border between the two powers shifted, placing colonies of either power on the other side of the border. Both powers offered the colonists the option to resettle on a planet within their own government's area, but most colonists refused. (TNG: "Journey's End") Unhappy with the decisions of the Federation and threatened by the secretive and illegal shipment of weapons to Cardassian colonists by their government, Federation colonists created a group called the Maquis, their goal to gain independence from the Cardassians. Some factions within the Federation and Starfleet supported the cause, and, like their Cardassian counterparts, provided weapons and other aid. (DS9: "The Maquis, Part I", "The Maquis, Part II"; TNG: "Preemptive Strike") Between 2370 and 2373, the Maquis movement grew, with hostilities flaring into a war and terrorist campaign against the Cardassians. The Cardassian government responded in kind, but, in 2372, became distracted by the Klingon-Cardassian War. With the Cardassians' attention turned away from them, the Maquis grew more successful, and, by 2373, were ready to declare their colonies independent. (DS9: "For the Cause", "Blaze of Glory") In 2373, the Cardassian Union joined the Dominion, and the Jem'Hadar occupied the DMZ. Shortly thereafter, with war declared between the Federation and Dominion, the zone was no longer. The Dominion also crushed the Maquis movement concurrently. (DS9: "By Inferno's Light", "Blaze of Glory"; VOY: "Hunters", "Extreme Risk")
(DS9: "The Maquis, Part I", "The Maquis, Part II"; TNG: "Preemptive Strike" ) However, by late 2370, to help reduce illegal shipments, the Federation had established a series of checkpoints and space buoys along their side of the border. Any ship that crossed anywhere other than a checkpoint would be investigated by Starfleet. (TNG: "Preemptive Strike" ) For the next three years, the DMZ was a hotbed of small-scale warfare as the Cardassian and Federation colonists conducted terrorist operations against each other. Eventually the Cardassian military became directly involved in the Maquis conflict on their side of the DMZ. However, in 2372 the Cardassians were forced to divert the majority of their attention to defending against the Klingon invasion in the Klingon-Cardassian War, leaving the Maquis practically unchecked in the DMZ. (DS9: "For the Cause") By 2373, the Maquis had been so successful that the Federation colonies were considering declaring themselves an independent nation. (DS9: "Blaze of Glory") The Demilitarized Zone was quickly overrun by the Jem'Hadar in 2373, shortly after the Cardassian Union joined the Dominion. As the Dominion moved towards open warfare with the Federation, the Demilitarized Zone ceased to exist and became Cardassian territory. (DS9: "By Inferno's Light")

File:Demilitarized Zone.png Once on a demilitarized zone at portals, you do not get the neutrality advantage. To get it back, you must either destroy the enemy that is attacking you so that after about 5-10 seconds you regain neutrality or jump the current portal you are at. Also be aware that there are portals that do not have a demilitarized zone. All battle maps do not have this protection except 4-5 when aliens is attacking you or jumping to pirates when attacked by either players or aliens. However, when you first directly enter an enemy map, you will temporarily gain neutrality, but that neutrality will be lost after a few seconds.
