Maturin was the governor of the Caldos colony in 2370. He was a member of an unknown species. As a child, he and his family visited Glamis Castle in Scotland on Earth. When he looked out across the Scottish Highlands, he immediately felt "as if he'd come home". Therefore he later moved to the colony, modeled after Scotland and later on even became its governor. In the Dark Tower story it gives power in the form of the magic object that is left for the Ka-tet known as the Skoldpadda, which has the power to blind and entrance enemies.
