| - Gilean Vel is one of the three surviving members of House Vel, an Illigyr merchant house that was dissolved by royal decree about 15 years ago for trafficking with Shadow. The other two surviving members are Gilean's daughter, Katya, and his younger brother, Daitha. Gilean Vel used to run the now defunct Circus of Song and Shadow, which was destroyed when the Birthalis authorities (with the aid of the Cursebreakers) discovered that a number of the circus employees were kidnappers, slavers, cannibals, trafficking in Shadow, or some combination of the four. A few performers were found to be innocent and released. The others were executed. Gilean Vel is also the head of the Diplomatic Group of the Research Branch of the Tenebrous Council. As such, he was also responsible for, and leading research at the Council's Dead Royals Swamp College. That research had as it's focus, the desire to merge Darelth with the Plane of Shadow. Side effects of that research were the cause of the undead armies that plagued the Three-Army Pass, and that were destroyed by the Cursebreakers in 968. The Cursebreakers also discovered and destroyed the college, before the research could successfully complete, a year later. After his resounding defeat, Gilean Vel was cast-out from the Council and sentenced to death. To enhance his survival chances and aid his vengenance, Gilean Vel underwent a psychic reformation. While in hiding, he encountered someone who is believed to be the Sorcerer Iritham, and pledged fealty to him. Gilean Vel was instrumental in helping Iritham gain (regain?) control of the Tenebrous Council, and now once again serves in his old position at Iritham's right hand. He is currently believed to be in a castle above a mist-shrouded valley somewhere, along with the rest of the Tenebrous Council, but his, and their, purpose there is unknown.
