In 1980-81 he scored a career-high 80 points. The following season he was transferred to the Pittsburgh Penguins as compensation for the siging of Greg Millen. Bouttete did well for the Penguins for two seasons, scoing 27 and 23 goals. By 1983 he was slowing down, He was traded back to the Whalers and retired in 1985. Boutette retired from the NHL following 752 games, recording 171 goals and 282 assists for 453 points as well as 1354 penalty minutes.
