Past events at the Academy become increasingly important on the Pioneer as well. O'Reilly proves to be a more by-the-book officer than his predecessor and those that are used to Quinton's comparatively relaxed style have trouble adjusting. O'Reilly has an illustrious Starfleet pedigree, being the son of the former commanding officer of the USS Ballard and a former Starfleet Academy instructor, and some suspect he's trying to live up to that reputation. One officer that feels that way is Adriana Watley, who was romantically involved with him for a year during their Academy days. New heads of science and flight control, Ensigns T'Ral and Lijaro Nabam, are former Academy rivals but their relationship begins to shift in unexpected ways when she asks an important favor of him. An away mission to a geologically unstable planet puts Watley in danger and O'Reilly and Sakura—second officer, chief of security, and Watley's fiancé— clash over the plan to save her.
