  • In the foothills of the Shade Mountains, north of Tarloc is one of the Shores oldest and most enduring legends. They speak of a great black dog, with fierce glowing eyes. Occasionally it bears a macabre skull for a face. Wolves and other beasts avoid it, and it is said that it can vanish from sight right before a man’s eyes. It has been said that occasionally, it will wander among the farms around the city. The Black Shulk appears at random, one can walk those foothills for years and never see it, and another may travel through them once and chance upon it. One sure way of seeing it, it is said, is walking those hills is on one day every year. The Eve before the forces of Tarloc and Ashrindale defeated Kheldom. The Black Shulk itself, if seen is said to bring those who see it good luck for a week. The legend also goes that the soldiers of Tarloc saw the Dog when marching to attack Kheldom’s army. However, after this, to see it again can only bring despair and misery. A second time will demote a man of great wealth to a beggar. A fair maiden to an old crone. A proud warrior to a weakling. And a third time is said to bring only death.
