Medecins Sans Frontieres, also referred to as Doctors without Borders or simple MSF, is a non-governmental organization that provides medical aid to war-torn and critical areas of the world. The French Organization was founded in 1971 during the Biafran Secession in Nigeria. Bernard Kouchner, a French doctor, found that other organizations such as the Red Cross, had taken the political side of the Nigerian government, thus denying aid to the Biafrans. In response, Kouchner created MSF to insure that basic needs would be provided to everyone regardless of any political or religious affiliations.
