Amphibians (class Amphibia; from Greek αμφις "both" and βιος "life") are a taxon of animals that include all living tetrapods (four-legged vertebrates) that do not have amniotic eggs, are ectotherms, and generally spend part of their time on land. Most amphibians do not have the adaptations to an entirely terrestrial existence found in most other modern tetrapods (amniotes). There are around 6,000 described, living species of amphibians. The study of amphibians and reptiles is known as herpetology. Amphibians are able to breathe through their skin, making them very sensitive to anything they come in contact with, including human hands. When observing amphibians, one should never touch them.

- Amphibians were species that could breathe both air and water, and were equally at home in either. Examples of sentient amphibious species included the Mon Calamari, the Chagrians, the Gungans, the Nautolans, the Aqualish, the Ishi Tib. and the Karkarodon. The planet of Dagobah was home to a number of quite common amphibian creatures.
- Amphibians are distinguished by their slimy, smooth (or rough and bumpy in the case of some toads) skin, cold-bloodedness, larval stage, and their small, round, fish-like eggs.
- Amphibia is a class from the Chordata phylum.
- When Counselor Deanna Troi was affected by Barclay's Protomorphosis Syndrome in 2370, she de-evolved into an amphibian, complete with gills. (TNG: "Genesis" ) When Tom Paris underwent a phase of hyper-evolution after reaching Warp 10 in 2373, he rapidly evolved into an amphibian lifeform. (VOY: "Threshold")

- Even as a child, Geoffrey Lamb took to the water like a fish. He was such a natural and excellent swimmer, his swim club coach thought he might have a shot at Olympic competition. But that was all before Geoffrey’s life took a distinct detour. He was nine years old when he and his parents were caught in a storm at sea just off the coast of Florida. Their boat capsized. That was when Geoffrey’s mutant aquatic powers manifested for the first time, allowing him to breathe under water. He tried to save both of his parents, but simply didn't have the strength to do so. Shocked and traumatized, he stayed near the capsized boat for nearly a day before he was found.
