He latter served as a Union Army General in the American Civil War. He was a leading supporter of the YMCA in Hartford when it was founded in the 1880s. Hillyer was a founding member of the board of the Hartford and Connecticut Valley Railroad in 1880. Hillyer served on the railroad's board until 1888.
