The College Hockey Showcase is an ongoing series of non-conference games between some of the foremost names amongst college hockey schools. The Showcase features the four Big Ten schools with long running hockey histories. Despite sharing a common athletic conference in other sports, as well as all belonging to the Western Collegiate Hockey Association in the 1970s, the schools do not currently share a conference. The current WCHA teams match up against the current Central Collegiate Hockey Association teams:

  • The College Hockey Showcase is an ongoing series of non-conference games between some of the foremost names amongst college hockey schools. The Showcase features the four Big Ten schools with long running hockey histories. Despite sharing a common athletic conference in other sports, as well as all belonging to the Western Collegiate Hockey Association in the 1970s, the schools do not currently share a conference. The current WCHA teams match up against the current Central Collegiate Hockey Association teams: * Michigan Wolverines (CCHA) * Michigan State Spartans (CCHA) * Minnesota Golden Gophers (WCHA) * Wisconsin Badgers (WCHA) The series occurs every year on the Friday and Saturday immediately following Thanksgiving, with the schools from one conference alternating years of travelling to play one game against each of their non-conference rivals. The Showcase began in 1993 as a way to rekindle the flames lost from the old WCHA. The first four Showcases rotated around neutral sites, each one near the home of one of the four participants. The first was held in the Palace at Auburn Hills, followed by the Saint Paul Civic Center, the Bradley Center in Milwaukee, and the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. Since then, the series has been extended at campus sites. All four teams share membership in the Big Ten athletic conference in all other major sports, yet have been separated in hockey since Michigan and Michigan State left the WCHA in 1981 for the CCHA. Unlike other long-running holiday tournaments, the Showcase is not a tournament at all, just a long-standing series to continue rivalries for schools that play against each other in almost all other sports. However, maintaining rivalries is not the only reason for the Showcase, as the four participants represent some of the most storied programs in Men's Division 1 with 21 NCAA Championships between them.
