Alan and Len learn of Bill Gregory's proposal to Elsie and Elsie tries to make up her mind. Ray hears he can go to Buxton Recuperation Centre and celebrates in No. 3 with the Flemings and the Butlers. Their celebration becomes slightly drunken and Ray suggests taking the red warning lamp away from the roadworks outside the house as a joke which they do for a few moments. Unfortunately this coincides with Annie returning from a visit to Gwen Fenton's and she falls down the hole dug in the Street. Covered in mud and incoherent with rage, she puts the blame on Ben, the nightwatchman and refuses to listen when told that the missing light has now been returned. Cleaning the windows at Ena's flat, Stan hears one of her original tunes and becomes interested in the possibility of them making money
