abstract
  • Canada, officially known as the Republic of Canada (French: République du Canada), is a sovereign state located in the northeastern portion of North America. The nation is bordered by Borealia in the north, Acadia in the east, and the United States in the south. The core of the nation is centered along the Saint Lawrence River. The territory of Canada was first colonized by the French beginning in the 16th Century. Following the French and Indian War, Canada became British colony. Despite the change of power, the region would continue to be dominated by French settlers. Despite attempts to accommodate the French-speaking populous, opposition to British rule would remain strong. Beginning in 1837, a series of rebellions erupted across British Canada and would include both English and French settlers. With significant backing from the United States, a French-dominated republic was proclaimed in 1838, while an English-dominated republic was separately established (later to be annexed by the USA). Canada is politically close with France and the United States, though still holds friendly ties with the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth Realm. The majority of Canadians are descended from the original French settlers of the region (colloquially known as Canadiens). Since gaining independence, Irish and Italian immigrants have settled within the nation. The official language of Canada is French, with the vast majority being native speakers. The majority of Canadians are Roman Catholic.
