Born sometime around 570 in the town of Mecca, it is known that Muhammad spent some time as a shepard. Later he became a servant of a merchants widow, and eventually married her. Outwardly, at least, there was little to distinguish Muhammad from anyone else. Muhammad ultimately ran afoul of polytheistic Mecca. As Muhammad's following grew larger, Mecca's leaders took note. Feeling threatened, they tried to suppress the followers. Boycotts were used. In 622, when things got particularly nasty, Muhammad took his followers to the city of Medina.

Outwardly, at least, there was little to distinguish Muhammad from anyone else. Everything seems to have changed when he was forty. It was at that point that he started setting the beginnings of Islam. At first it was done in secrecy. Only family and close friends knew about it. It began with visions, and eventually began to emerge verse by verse into a form that would eventually be known as the Quran. The teachings held that individuals were responsible for their deeds and spoke of righteousness, as well as of the afterlife. But most of all, the teachings were emphatically monotheistic with no use for idolatry.
