Edmund Barnes (19 May 1842 - 8 October 1926) was a local politician, schoolteacher and magistrate in the St Pancras area. Born in Blandford, Dorset, from 1850-1858 he was a chorister at Wimborne Minster. On his death he bequeathed a legacy which continues today as the Edmund Barnes Charity for Organ and Choir Fund. In 1885 he was elected to the London School Board, representing the Marylebone Division which included St Pancras along with Hampstead, Paddington and St Marylebone as an Independent. He was re-elected on five occasions, holding his seat until the board was abolished in 1904.

Born in Blandford, Dorset, from 1850-1858 he was a chorister at Wimborne Minster. On his death he bequeathed a legacy which continues today as the Edmund Barnes Charity for Organ and Choir Fund. Following training as a teacher at the Highbury North London Training College, he received his first teaching posts in Kent and then Wales. In 1869 he became headmaster of St Clement Danes School in London, and settled in St. Pancras, living there for the rest of his life. He was the organist at St Clement Danes Church from 1869-1882. In 1885 he was elected to the London School Board, representing the Marylebone Division which included St Pancras along with Hampstead, Paddington and St Marylebone as an Independent. He was re-elected on five occasions, holding his seat until the board was abolished in 1904. When the Metropolitan Borough of St Pancras was created in 1900, Barnes was chosen as its first mayor, serving two terms. In 1904 he was elected to the London County Council, which had taken over the powers of the school board, serving a single three-year term representing St Pancras East as a member of the Moderate Party. He was a justice of the peace, appointed a deputy lieutenant of the County of London in 1894 and chairman of the St Pancras Bench of Justices in 1905. He died suddenly in October 1926, aged 84. Following a funeral at St Pancras Parish Church he was buried in Highgate Cemetery on 13 October.
