The film was released to theatrical critical success earning twice it's budget and earning major appraisal for the performances of Ruffalo, Ferrell, Palicki, Statham, Kendrick and Hemsworth. The film was inspired by Michael Cooney and James Mangold's 2003 Thriller Identity and was first drafted out by Ferrell in 2009 as a short story which upon being read by Ramsay became a colloborative project with the director/screenwriter.
