Juksal was a soldier of Hogram's domain, a veteran of wars against other Skarmer domain-masters. He was a drillmaster in the preparation for the Skarmer invasion of Omalo territory, and taught Fralk the soldier's arts despite his being of lower social rank than the eldest of eldest. Fralk resented what he perceived a Juksal's picking on him, but Juksal was nonetheless an effective drillmaster. When the Skarmer army crossed the flooded Ervis Gorge, Juksal became the only Minervan to kill a human when he impaled Frank Marquard with an ice spear.

After Fralk and Oleg Lopatin were killed by Pat Marquard's incendiary weapon underslung from the Damselfly, Juksal assumed command of the remaining Skarmer forces and effected an orderly retreat to the Ervis Gorge. Juksal nearly succeeded in eluding capture and returning his forces intact to Hogram's domain, but was forced to surrender when Ternat stumbled upon his forces by happenstance. Juksal and all the remaining Skarmer soldiers were captured, and Hogram was forced to pay tribute to Reatur to obtain their release.
