A women auxiliary to the National Guard, the National Amazons was founded in 1793 after the Convention dismissed female "followers" of the army. While some were family members of soldiers, others actualy fought alongside males. The organisation, founded by Pauline Léon, intended to get around the ban by being set up along the lines of one of the many political clubs prevalent at the time.
