The Free Democrats were one of only three parties to make legislative gains. In 3169, Dewar ran for Supreme Executive and came in fourth place. She won 12.90% of the vote. Despite her defeat, she saw her party gain 21 seats in the Senate, bringing them to a total of 47. Dewar saw her support in public opinion polls rise. However, in July 3171, a newspaper reported that Dewar had used party funds to run for the leadership. Although she initially denied the allegations, she later admitted that she stole from the party to run for the leadership. The Senatorial Caucus was outraged and many called for her resignation. However, Dewar didn't resign until following the leadership election. She did not seek reelection to the Senate.
