The Kasumi family was a prominent family from Dantooine, with many of its members being involved in public service. The most famous member was Meiko Kasumi. The family began with Dina Kasumi, Meiko's grandmother by her father's side. Her son married Layla Kasumi, the daughter of Kayla Kasumi, and they had two girls, Meiko and Miku Kasumi. Miku married Darien Kasumi and had two children, Lina and Lisa. After some discussion, Miku and Darien agreed to keep Kasumi the family name, so their daughters' last name was Kasumi.

The family produced two Galactic Senators, Kayla Kasumi during the Galactic Republic era (24 BBY—19 BBY) and Lisa Kasumi during the Imperial era (6 BBY—0 BBY), that represented the Raioballo sector. The family was unaware that they were related to the Starkiller family through Meiko Kasumi, who secretly married Xanatos Starkiller, until around 36 ABY when Sakura Kasumi met with Lisa Kasumi and revealed the relationship between the two families.
