Mairs' next start came during the 1959 season, when he competed at Nashville. Starting 15th in the field, Mairs lost his engine nearly two thirds of the race in and finished a respectable 23rd. But Mairs' best season was 1961, when he finished 89th in points after his final three races. Mairs struggled a bit in his season opener, finishing last (18th) at Norwood after a very early mechanical issue. But Mairs rebounded fantastically in his final two races, finishing 8th at Bowman-Gray and then a career-best 7th place start and finish at Richmond.
