The Reynolds family of Vicky and Susan Reynolds (then ten and eight) and their parents, sailed with the Ransomes in the Northern River Pirates in 1938 and 1939 in a Fairway yacht, The highlight for Vicky was when the Primus stove in their cabin caught fire, though it was soon put out. She recalls evenings in the Ransomes’ cabin, listening to old African folk tales of a strange spider called Anansi. Vicky and Susan are wearing shorts (like the Amazons) in a photo of them and Arthur in the gale at Thurne Dyke (CFT pp 142-4 & photo 32).
