Soon a balance of power is developed in the German Realm, as many states seek an alliance to the Netherlands as an alternative to Prussia or Austria. The Great Germanic War of 1860, originally between Prussia and Austria, help reorganizing all German states into the three current blocks. After the Netherlands joined in 1862 against both Prussia and Austria Germany became divided in the three current countries. In the treaty of Frankfurt of 1863, Bremen, Hamburg, Hanover, Holstein, Luxemburg, Oldemburg, Schleswig, Rhineland, and the United States of Netherlands joined a Confederation of West German States. The Capital was chosen at Amsterdam. The Holy Roman Empire was dissolved. The Confederation soon entered a path towards greater central power. In 1916, the current states and borders were settled.
