Deepcore is a submersible loosely based on the Deep Core rig from the film The Abyss. It's mission is scientific rather than oil drilling. Deepcore has an unstreamlined hull. It pushes itself slowly along the seabed using its ducted propellers, supported by (unpowered) tracks. It can also be assist-towed by a flatbed submersible. It is connected to a surface vessel via an umbilical. This provides telecommunications and auxiliary air supply (for life support and for the diesel engine.) Deepcore's principle energy source is a bank of lead-acid batteries that provides 18 hours of motive power (and otherwise runs low power systems indefinitely). If the vessel is connected via umbilical, it can run the diesel engine to recharge the batteries; otherwise Deepcore must surface. The moonpool is a "hangar bay" which opens directly into the water below. It holds three submersibles: Flatbed, use for towing and lifting; and two smaller "cabs" for exploration. In the rear of Deepcore is a core sample drilling rig. Machinery moves extracted cores to the cargo hold. There are two two-person teams of scientists running a geology lab and marine biology lab.
