Synopsis
  • Mark arrives at Cliff House, the home of Olivia Vancroft. Olivia agreed to a meeting after Eliot Shaw threatened her and Mr. DeVree with a lawsuit over Dumas' criminal actions. Mark offers Olivia his mask in exchange for her calling off Dumas but Olivia regretfully declines saying that Dumas will never call off a job once accepted. Olivia asks Mark to don his mask and he does which activates the mask's sensors. Mark leaves but has secretly learned that Olivia's heart rate matches that of a man's. Comparing voiceprints, Mark deduces that Olivia and Dumas are the same person. He writes what he knows in a letter and sends it to Eliot Shaw with a note to forward it to reporter Howard Baxter-Foote. That night Mark, as Manhunter, sneaks into Olivia's house and confronts her with his discovery and threatens to release the information to the press if she/he goes anywhere near Mark or his family again. Dumas, in costume, appears and says that he can easily disguise himself as Mark and destroy the letter and then the family. Left with no other choice, Manhunter and Dumas fight. Manhunter holds his own but makes no progress as he is in Dumas' home, which is filled with traps and is unfamiliar ground to Manhunter. So he tries another approach. He begins destroying the mask collection which enrages Dumas and draws him out in the open. Mark uses his baton's magnetic pulse to fire Peacemaker's helmet at Dumas with such force that Dumas smashes into a wall breaking all of his bones. After Dumas dies, Mark takes Dumas' and his own mask and add them to the mask collection.
Notes
  • * Due to a retcon presented in Issue 13 of the third Manhunter series, Mark Shaw was purportedly brainwashed into having a second, hidden personality known as Dumas. It is unclear if there was ever a real Dumas, if Shaw always unknowingly acted as Dumas, and/or if "encounters" with Dumas were all imagined or hallucinated. Thus certain aspects of this story may not be considered canon.
