Milling was the process of removing material from the surface of a piece of metal to shape it. In 2370, the blacksmith Skoran was of the opinion that radioactive material left over from a Federation deep space probe that crashed on Barkon IV had been milled. (TNG: "Thine Own Self" )

- The process of cracking the grain to expose the floury portion of the kernels and breaking it down to a fine powder, sieving out the unwanted portions of the broken grain. The powder continues to be broken down and sieved until the powder is fine enough for the type of flour being made.
- Milling, part of the brewing process, is the act of crushing the grain kernels to separate the husk from the seed, which contains the majority of the carbohydrates and sugars. This makes it easier to extract the sugars during mashing. Care must be taken when milling to ensure that the starch reserves are sufficiently milled without damaging the husk and providing coarse enough grist that a good filter bed can be formed during lautering.
- Milling, a sub-skill of Inscription, is used to make pigments from herbs which can be obtained via the Herbalism skill. Five herbs of the same type are consumed per milling attempt and produce 1-4 pigments, with the most common result being a single pigment milled. Higher level herbs may also occasionally produce rarer pigments. Similar to Prospecting, the type of herbs that can be milled for pigments scales up with Inscription skill level.
