He played junior hockey with the Peterborough Petes and the London Knights. The Toronto Maple Leafs chose him 83rd overall in the 1979 NHL Entry Draft. He played in the Maple Leafs' system thorugh the 1983-84 season and then left for Italy. Nigro played eight seasons in the Italian leagues and played for Italy in the 1992 Olympics and the 1989, 1990, and the 1991 World Championships. He retired in 1992.
