The February 25, 1969 coup d'etat in Scotland was the beginning of the Scottish Civil War, in which the Scottish Royal Army seized control of the central district of Edinburgh and demanded the abdication of King Robert V, seeking to place his son in stewardship and negotiate a peace treaty with rioting protestors in major Scottish cities. The brief military government failed shortly thereafter due to infighting amongst the generals and car bombings carried out by radical left-wing guerrillas. Eight days after the coup, the monarchy was officially abolished, leading into the Scottish Civil War.
