Magic-user is a D&D term for a type of arcane caster. Magic-users are adept at casting spells that attack foes or alter the environment, such as sleep, fireball, and teleport. Magic-users existed in Original Dungeons & Dragons, the Dungeons & Dragons Basic Set, and Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. In Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2e, the magic-user was renamed the mage. The same character archetype was renamed wizard and a related character who uses the same spells but does not rely on spellbooks is called a sorcerer.

Since most of these classes are not muscular, their weapon wielding is limited to daggers, staves, and light weapons, including bows in some instances, as their class specifications allow.
