The Artilleryman is one of the main founder of The Court. Although his real name is not known, Gunnerkrigg Court somehow gets its name from him. Artillerymen are also known as Gunners. He is a close friend of Steadman. Artilleryman was present at the founding of the court, and was supposed to be part of the plot to assassinate Jeanne, but he refused to be part of it.

They leave together but get seperated by a Martian attack at Weybridge. later on in the book we find the Artilleryman in Wimbledon, London. He has gone slightly mad and thinks London can be rebuild in the drains below. He believes the Martians will turn the humans against each other. The Narrator goes along with his plans until he realises that it is crazy and then leaves the Artilleryman to his own devices.
