| - Transphobia is a range of negative attitudes and irrational feelings towards transsexuality and transsexual or transgender people, based on their gender expression. Transphobic people generally express or feel emotional disgust, fear, anger or discomfort towards people who don't conform to society's gender expectations. Transphobia is a form of gender discrimination or sexism, and is a problem in geek communities.
- Transphobia is a non-clinical term related to the irrational hatred or fear of transsexual or transgender people. Signs of true transphobia in a person include anxiety or anxiety attacks, rapid fear onset, persistent stress, fainting and/or extreme discomfort. Many people labelled as transphobic do not exhibit these symptoms, and the common interpretation of transphobia has changed to denote people who demonstrate a negative attitude toward transsexual or transgender people. As such, the term "transphobia" can be misleading, and in most cases is an invalid analogy of the medical terminology and hence, the term should be used with care.
- Transphobia (or less commonly, transprejudice) refers to discrimination against transsexuality and transsexual or transgender people, based on the expression of their internal gender identity (see Phobia - terms indicating prejudice or class discrimination). Whether intentional or not, transphobia can have severe consequences for the object of the negative attitude. Many transpeople also experience homophobia from people who incorrectly associate the medically recognised condition of gender identity disorder as a form of homosexuality. __TOC__

Examples of Transphobia include Misgendering, Deadnaming and Abinphobia and using slang such as "tranny" when referring to trans people, which may be upsetting to a transgender or transsexual person. Slang terms such as this are is wide usage. Transphobia can also be exhibited through aggression and violence, and the number of crimes related to transphobia is increasing, as seen here.
Discriminatory or intolerant behaviour toward transsexuals might include harassment, assault, or murder. Direct forms of intolerance may also manifest themselves in non-violent ways. Indirect discrimination may include refusing to ensure that transgender people are treated in the same manner as non-transgender people. Trans-bashing is the practice of victimising someone because they are transgender and is a form of transphobia. Unlike gay bashing, it is attacking someone based on their gender identity rather than because of their predisposition regarding sexuality. Some believe that accusing transgender people of being victims of "gay-bashing" erases their identities and the truth of what happens to them. __TOC__
