abstract
  • The House of Commons is a democratically elected body consisting of 300 members known as Members of Parliament (MPs). Members are elected by simple majority ('first-past-the-post' system) in each of the country's electoral districts called ridings. Each Member of Parliament holds their seat until Parliament is dissolved. Seats in the Commons are distributed evenly based on population. The House of Commons was created in 1875 when the British North Atlantic Territory Act, 1875 was granted Royal Assent, creating the Dominion of New Anglia, and is modeled on the House of Commons of the United Kingdom. Though only one of the two houses of Parliament, the House of Commons is generally considered to hold more power than the Senedd; though both houses must agree on legislation, the upper house rarely rejects bills, and only occasionally amends them. The Government, led by the prime minister, is only responsible to the House of Commons.
