abstract
| - The French Revolutionary War, lasting from 1789 until 1797, was a major war fought between the French Revolutionary government and several other European states. The war had been primarily fought to end absolute monarchy in France and instead to become a republic. Marked by French revolutionary fervor and military innovations, the campaigns saw the French Revolutionary Armies defeat a number of opposing coalitions. Revolutionaries saw armed conflict on numerous fronts, both in France and in neighboring countries. The war concluded with the Treaty of Campo Formio, with the international recognition of France as a republic. France also expanded its territorial extent into the Low Countries, Italy, and the Rhineland.
