- Chaos Chao are very special chao that can only be obtained under special circumstances.
- Creating a Chaos Chao is a long process. In order for a Chao to become a Chaos Chao, it needs to have reincarnated (or "transformed", as the game calls it) at least twice. How the player raises the Chao in its previous lives has absolutely no impact on whether or not a Chao can become a Chaos Chao. After a Chao transforms for the second time, the player can give it at least one of every small animal in the game. The player can still feed it fruit, and should do so to keep their Chao happy. If all of the requirements are met, when the Chao evolves, it should come out of the cocoon as a Chaos Chao, as seen in the above picture.

- The Chaos Chao first appeared as Chaos in the events of Mission: Chao Retry. He is a baby chao that is very sweet, kind, shy, curious, and kinda a cry baby. When Rascal placed the ball among his head, Chaos appeared in the Lobby. The chao fought him and he "died", turning into an egg. This hatched into the Chaos Chao, which looked up to and followed Nox.

So far, the only times the Chaos Chao really effects the plot is when he turns into Chaos. Chaos is about the height of the waterfall in Chao Gardens and about the width of the lake in Chao Gardens. It has a dark sphere in its center, marking its weak point. It can repair itself and grow tentacles, which it flings at people. Chaos can also take on other forms of liquid, too. Such as turning into gooey blood and turning red. Chaos can also freeze for a while. The Chaos Chao now has a metal coating. It is unknown if he's completely metal or not. This occured when Chaos Transformed during The Battle of Neutral Chao. Chaos has no alignment, even if it feels it may be good. Chaos can attack anyone, but does have free will in it. Chaos doesn't take orders, either, and will fight independently. When the ball is removed, Chaos turns back to the Chaos Chao. Apparently, the Chaos Chao growls at the sight of the ball, showing that the Chaos knows something about it.

They are immortal, never reincarnating nor dying. Chaos Drives and small animals don't affect the appearance of Chaos Chao, though they can still come in different colors. Chaos Chao also cannot mate. Though their behavior remains the same before they transformed, they can no longer change their facial expressions with the exception of falling asleep and having their nap interrupted, and are still able to blink. Neutral Chao that evolve into Chaos Chao become Light Chao, Dark Chao that evolve into Chaos Chao become Devil Chao, and Hero Chao that evolve into Chaos Chao become Angel Chao. Chaos Chao have an ominous, organ-like jingle when they transform. Contrary to popular belief, giving a Chaos Chao drives or extra animals does not prevent the Chao from becoming a Chaos Chao. This, however, should not be abused, as a Chao must still evolve into a Normal Type. (In other words, the Chao must have used the Animals/Chaos Drives in balanced matter: ten red Chaos Drives, ten purple, etc.)
