- In contrast to other changelings such as Kevin, Thorax has somewhat wholer ears and tail, slightly differently-colored eyes, and differently-colored back armor. Following his metamorphosis in To Where and Back Again - Part 2, Thorax is much taller, and he has a different color scheme—matching that of S06E26 Unnamed Changeling #2—and beetle-like mandibles protruding from his forehead. The ribs and the diaphragm move so that the thoracic cavity increases and decreases in size during the inspiratory and expiratory phases of respiration. It also probably aids in returning venous blood back to the heart because of the negative pressure produced with respiratory movements. Secondarily it serves to protect the organs located within its cavity plus some organs of the abdominal cavity. The main thoracic organs which you will examine in your dissection of the thorax are the:
- The thorax (also referred to as the thoracic crest or chest) was a division of a person's or animal's body that lay between the head and the abdomen. The heart and the lungs resided in the thoracic cavity, as well as many blood vessels. The inner organs were protected by the rib cage and the sternum. In 2268, a dying Leonard McCoy suffered from bleeding in his chest and abdomen after he was tortured by the Vians. (TOS: "The Empath" ) After the IKS Drovana was damaged, Dr. Julian Bashir treated seven Klingons with thoracic perforation trauma caused by shrapnel. (DS9: "Sons of Mogh")
