Naturally, he prefers to work alone, stating that he's cleansing the internet his own way He first arrived to fight off the new programs Robotnik had set up, but quickly turned his attention to Espio, who had entered the internet to perform a threat assessment. They fought for a time, at least until Espio had learned enough to determine that Shadow wasn't necessarily against him. However, when Espio offered to come back with a strike team, Shadow turned him down. Upon his return to the material world, Espio would later describe Shadow as rude, arrogant, aggressive, and socially inept, but felt that they might have a use for him. Some time later, Shadow found himself in combat with Robotnik who was acting through his Libra robot. Whenever Shadow would damage the robot in any way, its material counterpart would repair itself, which gave Sonic some trouble on the other side. The same effect would occur when Sonic was able to damage the robot on his end. Shadow had seen programs that behaved in a similar way and soon worked out what to do, though wasn't entirely sure if his plan would work. He hacked into the robot, disabling all major functions, which meant it could be destroyed by an oncoming train on Sonic's side. Still in control of the functioning parts, Shadow looked upon Mobius and briefly talked with Sonic, though told the hero, who didn't recognise his voice, that they were not allies and he was better off not knowing who exactly had helped him. It was later revealed that "Ichneumon" is actually a young girl, Iggy, that had found the "fuzzy ball of energy" that Kintobor had created and gave it a personality, namely an "aloof anti-hero" with "questionable morals. He was given the identical appearance of the real Shadow by Iggy after she had seen a glimpse of footage from the Death Carrier. Although he had been created with a completely different personality to the deranged "ultimate lifeform", he started to feel tempted by Robotnik's offer to free him from the Internet; following a routine attack on Robotnik's digital propaganda, the tyrant appeared to Shadow and offered to place him in a Metallix suit as a temporary solution, giving the hedgehog the chance to feel the outside world.
