Nebula (Latin for cloud, the plural is nebulae or nebulæ) were so named because as deep sky objects observed in telescopes were dim fuzzy objects unlike stars or planets which have a discernable disk or stars which are near-pinpoints. With better instruments nowadays, we find that nebulae can be galaxies, star clusters, or clouds of dust and/or gas.
