Swayne insisted that he was an independent and that he would not be a candidate for elected office. However, his integrity won the hearts and minds of many Baltusians and his poll numbers quickly began to rise. He was not in the lead, however, he was poised to take a significant amount of support in the leadership contest. Finally, while addressing reporters, Swayne announced his bid for the leadership. He led on every ballot and won with 54.1% of the vote. In the January 3129 elections, Swayne narrowly led in the first round and overwhelmingly won on the second ballot. Despite his huge win, he saw the party lose a quarter of the parliamentary caucus. Soon after his election, he apologized to members of his caucus. He asked for a vote of confidence on his leadership. Many speculated that Swayne would actually lose the vote and have to step down as leader of the Free Democrats. However, when the caucus exited the party's chambers, it was announced that Swayne had secured every vote. During the 3133 elections, Swayne won only 23% of the vote in his presidential bid and was defeated in his parliamentary constituency. Days later, he resigned the leadership. The parliamentary elections proved to be a disaster as well. 46% of the caucus was ousted. Despite this, the Free Democratic-Commonwealth-BPA coalition remained intact. He never ran for elected office again and returned to the bench. He died in 3153 at the age of 82. His wife, Marie, died in 3159 at the age of 85. Rosalie became a popular singer and performed across all of Baltusia. She died in 3174 at the age of 74. Beverley became a legal analyst and died in 3165 at the age of 61.
