Falconpaw's words sting me like fire; I'm not sure what I'm more confused about: how we'll die, or what Falconpaw said. The tabby is still whispering in my ear as we walk in pairs, following Talon. "I've seen her before. I'm almost a warrior, and I'm sure you're aware of how early they took us, right?" I give her a small nod. My mother told me of how early they were coming this year. Last year, she said, the picks were taken later on. Falconpaw continues, and I focus on her again. "Well, I saw some of last year's picks about a moon after they were taken. Talon was with them."

  • Falconpaw's words sting me like fire; I'm not sure what I'm more confused about: how we'll die, or what Falconpaw said. Talon was with them." I draw in a sharp breath. She's shaking as she says it, her fur rubbing mine because of how close she is. "I tried to get more information on Talon, but instead of a conversation, she attacked me." "It was so brutal...I saw more birds, and I was the only one alive after all that brutality." Now I know exactly how she got all her scars. I wonder if she was damaged badly in some of her vital organs. The tabby shifts, then moves away from me. We keep walking behind Talon, though I think about Falconpaw's words. How badly was she wounded? Is Talon not who she seems? Is Falconpaw lying? Are they actually going to kill us? I shove the thoughts out of my mind and focus on Talon. Now I want to speak with her. She doesn't turn, but her voice is quite bitter. "Before I kill you, you get one night of sleep. Each one of you will be picked off. Some may be taken together and others will be taken alone." She turns her head to the brown tom Reedpaw. "Except for you." She narrows her eyes and lets out a cry. Reedpaw screams and struggles to push himself off the ground. He had already sat, but now he is struggling against the smooth, metal ground. But Talon is too fast for him. She shoots into the air and dives down, grabbing the tom and taking him away. Everyone is frozen in shock. Nobody can believe what has just happened. Talon flies back and lands on the ground, lifting one leg afterwards and pointing a claw towards a metal corner. "You guys sleep there for one night. Afterwards you will each be taken." Novody says anything, just curls up beside one another. Falconpaw and Sunsetpaw curl up beside me. I'm tired and exhausted, though I stay up later than everyone else. The tabby shecat beside me shifts, but I don't mind her. I think about Talon. Is she scared? Is Reedpaw dead? Am I going to die too? And what about the rest of us?!?
