| - Super Saiyan was the most popular legend of the Saiyan race. The last Saiyan to become a Super Saiyan had one thousand years prior. The legend had become so prevalent that even has Freeza heard of the legend from the conversations of the Saiyns. The fear of a Saiyan becoming a Super Saiyan triggered Freeza to destroy Planet Vegeta. Years later, Son Goku fulfilled the legend on Namek and transformed into a Super Saiyan in a battle against the evil emperor, Freeza.

- Super Saiyan (超サイヤ人, Sūpā Saiya-jin) is an advanced transformation assumed by extraordinarily powerful members of the Saiyan race in the Dragon Ball franchise, as well as Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball parody manga, Neko Majin. Three further transformations succeed Super Saiyan (two in the manga), and the premier Super Saiyan form has three additional branch states. Within Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball GT, two further transformations, the second and third, succeed Super Saiyan, while the premier form also has two additional grade states, which include two forms that focus on power. - The concept of the Super Saiyan was first succeeded by Son Goku. Later, it was shown that the Trunks from an alternate timeline was able to reach it, and Vegeta reaches the form as well through lots of training. Son Gohan reached the form during training with Goku. During his battle with Cell, Gohan also reached a second transformation known as Super Saiyan 2. During Goku's battle with Majin Buu, Goku shows the Super Saiyan 3 transformation. In the anime-only sequel known as Dragon Ball GT, a forth Super Saiyan stage known as a Super Saiyan 4 is shown to exist.
