The show featured Jack "Rabbit" Wheeler (voiced by Bob Arbogast), the leader of the "Hot Wheels Racing Club" at Metro City High School. In each episode, the Hot Wheels club would race against "Dexter's Demons", a rival club run by the reckless Dexter Carter.

By 1971, the Federal Communications Commission became concerned that the cartoon was using public broadcast time for advertising messages, and ruled that the opening and any references to the phrase "Hot Wheels" be counted as commercial time. This led ABC to cancel the program.
